The new owners of Chestnut Ridge Farm, a spectacular property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, wanted to expand their living space and open the entire house to the landscape and magnificent views. Dalgliesh Gilpin Paxton Architects fashioned an addition with cottage-like charm that complements the strong mass of the existing house. In the renovated kitchen, exterior walls of glass, a vaulted ceiling and shed dormers fill the room with spaciousness and light. The chestnut orchard, for which the farm is named, seems to weave through the kitchen and leaves its mark in the form of an island top made from the trees themselves. Large bay windows, French doors, and a long porch open the house to the landscape and give the family generous spaces from which to enjoy the outdoors.
